President Erdogan leads with 55.03 percent of votes in preliminary results: Turkish media—Photo: File

After Turkey’s presidential and parliamentary elections, the counting process has begun and according to preliminary results, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has an advantage over the opposition candidates, but Turkish media say that he will not win 50 percent of the vote.

According to Turkish media reports, 96 percent of votes have been counted in the presidential election in Turkey.

According to the results so far, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is leading with 49.63% of the votes, while his opponent Kemal Kilic Daroglu is second with 44.63% of the votes, while the third candidate, Sinan Oghan, has managed to get 5.29% of the votes so far.

More than 50 percent of the votes are required to become the president, if not more than 50 percent of the votes, the decision is likely to be taken in the second phase of the elections on May 28.

It should be noted that the voting process for presidential and parliamentary elections in Turkey continued from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm local time.

Apart from this, 90 percent of the votes have been counted in the parliamentary elections and according to the results so far, President Erdogan’s Justice and Development Party has won 267 seats in the House of 600.

According to the foreign news agency, for the first time in the history of Turkey, 24 parties and 151 independent candidates are participating in the elections, more than 6.5 million voters are registered in Turkey.

A tough competition is expected between Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan and opposition leader Kemal Kilic Daroglu in the presidential election.

If more than 50 percent of the votes are not received, the second phase of the elections will be held on May 28.
